Image processing technique of smoke flow visualization for the prediction of behavior of airborne sea salt around a bridge girder

Recently, the importance of maintenance to infrastructures has been increasing. One of the most important points in bridge maintenance is to prevent its corrosion. Especially, it is necessary to predict the advection diffusion behavior of airborne sea salt around a bridge girder because bridges located in coastal areas are affected by it. In the present study, in order to predict the behavior of airborne sea salt, we conducted flow visualizations around a square cylinder and a bridge girder which has two I-girders. Then we evaluated smoke concentration of the visualized flows by using the image processing technique. As a result, it is confirmed that smoke concentration of the inner region of the separated shear layer is very small. Therefore, it can be estimated amount of airborne sea salt inside the separated shear layer region is smaller than other regions.
